Well here are two deals on different ends of the intimidatingly-chic spectrum:
- Amazon is getting into the daily deal game? I'm on board. This one ends very soon, but you can pay $10 for $20 at Village Pourhouse (64 Third Avenue, 366 W. 46th St., or Amsterdam and 109th), SideBAR (118 E. 15th St.), or Little Town NYC (focuses on food and drink sourced from NY; 118A E. 15th Street). Apparently they're all owned by the same group. Pretty damn convenient.
- This month, trendy Japanese-Brazilian-Peruvian restaurant SushiSamba will have a Brazilian happy hour from 4-7p M-F at both of their locations (245 Park Avenue South; 87 Seventh Avenue South). $6 bar food such as coconut scallop ceviche and short rib trouxinhas, $6 fancy cocktails (worth it), and exotic beers for $5. [via Gothamist]
noun. 1. diversion from the doldrums by music, comedy, food, art, or theater 2. entertainment of the cheaper-than-usual variety

No Goat Left Behind
Just look at this event:
[via My Free Concert]
Guys, this is a completely free (no RSVP even!) goat roast dinner, including wine and Brooklyn Brewery beer. It almost sounds too good to be true. From the Betto via Brooklyn Brewey website:
From 9pm-Midnight on October 17th Betto will host a FREE “Goatoberfest” goat roast, with free bubbles from Skurnik wine and free beer from Brooklyn Brewery. It’s in support of Heritage Food USA’s “No Goat Left Behind” initiative which is a project intended to introduce goat as a viable meat product in the US while simultaneously aiding dairy farms that have little need for male goats, and as a result are being sold into the commodity market or killed at birth. They are working with 15 local family farmers to bring goat into homes and restaurants across the nation.
We will be presenting Whole Roasted Goat, served with Grilled Flatbread, and an assortment of Condiments and Pickles, along with some other light snacky stuff.
It's actually a pretty neat concept. It's funny though, when you think about if "No Child Left Behind" had been interpreted this way...
Betto Restaurant (138 N. 8th Street, Brooklyn), Monday 10.17, 9p-12a.
So who wants to go for free dinner Monday night?
Cider Festival and Chocolate Weekend
This Friday-Sunday is the first ever Chocolate Weekend, which means chocolatiers throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn will be holding free tastings, discounts, and demonstrations. The website is currently down, but Gothamist has a little bit more information, and when the site's back up you can add all the free stuff to your schedule.
I love hard cider, so I am v. excited for this: Cider Week 10.16-10.23. A lot of the events are paid, but there are a bunch of free tastings highlighting different cideries (Eve's Cidery is a good one). Check out all of the events here. There's also a Cider Party on 10.24 at 92Y Tribeca, which is free with RSVP (harvestawards@glynwood.org), although it's unclear if only admission is free, or if the food and drink will be too. Gothamist also has a good list of bars and shops in the city who specialize or sell cider. I think I'm going to go eat an apple.

Another free scotch event
Thanks to my friend Ben for pointing this out to me: "Raise the Macallan" scotch tastings, 11/1-11/4. All of the time slots are post-work and at 82 Mercer. I imagine that there will also be light food and a ridiculous pitch by a brand ambassador, like at the Johnnie Walker tasting a couple of weeks ago. Good times.

Week o' parties
YOU GUYS: How to Make it in America is throwing two late night happy hours (10-11p and 12-1a) with free Hendrick's Gin and free Hudson Whiskey every day this week (M-F). These will be good. Tonight from 10-11p free Hendrick's Gin at The Stanton Social (swank) and 12-1a free Hudson Whiskey at Gallery Bar (with DJ Ali Shaheed of A Tribe Called Quest). My Free Concert has the full line up and Facebook links for each event (I recommend RSVP-ing).
One more thing: if you RSVP'd to and/or attended the Brooklyn Magazine launch party at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, a free pass to the Chile Pepper Festival this Saturday (10.1) should have arrived in your inbox. I'd post my ticket for all of you, but it says they'll be checking names at the door, so I don't think it would help. These normally run $15, and while I'm not exactly sure what admission includes, there will be lots of music and free samples of sauces and chocolate. Plus, you get to hang out in the Botanical Gardens again. Pretty!

One more thing...
Details are a little fuzzy, but I'd say RSVP to events@nymag.com now. New York Magazine and Svedka having a throw down with nine "top mixologists" to determine the best vodka cocktail via your votes. I'm usually the last person to get excited about vodka, but I love me some cocktails and competition. And maybe a rooftop? Evening of 9.21, Above Allen at Thompson LES (190 Allen Street), exact time TBD.

Power Tuesday
I'm just really excited that we have electricity back after Hurricane Irene. Hurrah!
Tuesday stuff:
1) As mentioned earlier, there is a Summer Social event at 404 10th Avenue (at 33rd Street). Free entry, and free Satisfaction Vodka cocktails from 7-8p. It looks like a large place, and it might be partially outdoors, which is great with this weather. RSVP to Patsy@404nyc.com.
2) Via My Free Concert, Disco Down at former "health club" Happy Ending (302 Broome St.) from 7p-4a. Apparently you can drink inside a sauna (I hope not still functioning). Mix of music and open bar from 8-9p and 11p-12a. I believe this happens every Tuesday, so no worries if you miss it this time. No RSVP necessary.

3) Thunder & Lightning rescheduled their concert to make way for the hurricane; it's tonight at Cameo (93 N. 6th St., Williamsburg). They go on at 9p, doors are at 8:30p. This is either free or cheap. I discovered Thunder & Lightning by accident, and they were better live than either of the acts I had come to see. I don't know if the rest of the crowd knew them beforehand, but the energy level went noticeably up for their set. Right now the best 'sounds like' I can think of is The Unicorns (now Islands). Another impossible-to-Google band, but their album 'Kangaroo Court' is pay-what-you-wish on Bandcamp.

Free Whiskey
From My Free Concert: Johnnie Walker is having free tasting events over five days (9/6-9/10) at the Altman Building on West 18th Street. You're going to want to RSVP now, because time slots are filling up. For those of you not in the New York area, I believe Johnnie Walker is holding free events in a handful of cities around the country. Go and get that swank.

UPDATE: Four and Twenty Blackbirds is closed for the week for vacation. They reopen Tuesday August 30th. All the more reason to go to other cool events at the Bell House.

"Thanks for your RSVP to the BlackBook Outside Insiders Party presented by Grey Goose. As much as we love your interest in our shindigs, we’ve got some sucky news. Invites to our events are non-transferable, and only the people who really wanted to come to this thing, those on the original RSVP list, will be let in. Summer bummer, we know, but there will be many more to come. Swear." I'm not really sure what the 'original RSVP list' is, but we're probably not on it. That being said, I'm signing up for the newsletter here. Hopefully some good will come of it. |
