I Just Want My Pants Back, Reality Bounce, and more

1) The second installment of the I Just Want My Pants Back parties sounds pretty great: Chris Keating (Yeasayer) will DJ, and there will be live performances by Violens and Headless Horseman. 2) Reality Bounce at Sway (305 Spring Street) on Thursday 1.19, free Pyrat Rum hurricanes 10:30-11:30p. Normally I wouldn't post a mere 1 hour open bar unless the party/music itself seemed worthwhile on its own, but guys, free hurricanes! How douchetacular! [via My Open Bar]

3) The Cat Face Party, 1.20, 10p, at Public Assembly Loft (70 N. 6th Street). "$3 with a cat face on your face $20 with no cat face on your face". Word. [via The Print Up]

Not going to lie, I got excited because I thought there would be free candy, unaware that this is the name of a venue. Anyway, not sure how this will pan out, but looks like there'll be loads of DJs, live performances, and free Brooklyn Brewery beer. Free with RSVP.

Monday 12.5.11 [BLACK KEYS UPDATE]

All right kids, let's talk Monday.

1) It looks like Southern Comfort is the sponsor for that Black Keys secret show at Webster Hall. Like them on Facebook and keep a close watch. They'll be announcing how to get tickets Monday at 9:45a.

2) Monday Night Vinyl Swap & Funk Fest  [scratch that, reverse it] at the Parkside Lounge (317 E. Houston), 9p. Free Magner's cider, too. [via My Open Bar]

3) Iceland Wants to Buy You a Drink, Parts 1 and 2. Free Reyka Vodka, sweepstakes for Iceland trips, and music by Jeff Who? Part 1 is 7-9p at Home Sweet Home (131 Chrystie St.), Part 2 is 10p-12a at R Bar (218 Bowery).

4) PigPen Theatre Co. debut album celebration/concert at the Barrow Street Theater, 7-9p, $10. This is less of a release party and more of a "get-people-excited-and-donate-to-our-Kickstarter" party. PigPen is a group of recent Carnegie Mellon graduates, and their The Mountain Song was very buzzed about at the NY International Fringe Festival. Subsequently, The Nightmare Story (which I can personally say was great) played at the Irondale Center in Brooklyn this past October. Low-tech, cleverly produced folk tales with lots of music, shadow puppets, and banjo-wielding. What I'm saying is, there will be cute boys playing bluegrass music, and you can feel good about supporting new talent.

TANE OUT.

Black Keys secret show is now less secret

Okay kids, this is a big one. The Black Keys are playing a free album release show at Webster Hall on 12.5. Drummer Patrick Carney recently tweeted: "12/5 Release Show is @WebsterHall & streams on @MTVHive. NYC fans your tix are already paid for. How to get em coming soon"

If you want better odds, 97.7, Sirius XM, 100.1 WDST, WEQX, and WXPN are giving away tickets.

Good luck, and please take me with you.

This week the DJ is Ben Goldwasser (MGMT). Night of Joy supposedly has a cool outdoor space, too. [via My Free Concert

5) Little Scream, Rain Machine, and Akau at Pianos (158 Ludlow St.), $8. 8p.

Parenthetical Girls

Also, "The Pornographer" (sort of NSFW--not graphic, but a remarkable homage to Andy Warhol's film Blow Job):

Turned on [to them] yet? Parenthetical Girls are playing a show at Glasslands (289 Kent Avenue, Brooklyn) on Thursday 12/1 (8:30p), along with Gauntlet Hair and Dinowalrus. $10a/$12d. Should be a really good show. Oh, and did I mention that the four part EP they released last year came in special edition vinyl signed with the frontman's blood?!

Thirsty Thursday 11.17

1) Free cocktails at the Calligaris store opening (969 Third Avenue), 5:30-8:30p. RSVP to mgilbert@susanbecherpr.com. [via The Print Up]

2) Another Vitamin Water Presents concert at Santos Party House (96 Lafayette St.), 7:00-10:00p (or 7:30-10:30p; the e-mail is kind of unclear). Acts include Suckers, Javelin, and Lemonade. Free PBR and Vitamin Water. RSVP here.

3) I don't exactly know what this is, but: "Sam n' Jo" Open House Grand Opening at 244 E. Houston St. Free limo service for ladies (ugh) and free champagne for the first hour. RSVP here. Okay, I'm reading the write-up on that page, and this event looks skeezy, but someone might be into it. [via The Print Up]

Switchboard, Listen to This, and 89th and Broke

Whew. I am on a music high from St. Vincent on Thursday and Slow Club tonight, but here are a couple things for which to plan ahead:

1) Didn't get in on the RSVP for the free Matt & Kim concert on 11.8? It's Switchboard #9 on the roof of Hotel Chantelle (92 Ludlow St.), 8p-1a. I have yet to go to one of Telephoned's Switchboard parties, but they always look cool. In addition to Telephoned, Penguin Prison, Cousin Cole, and DJ Rad will be performing. RSVP at Good-Peoples.com.

2) 89th and Broke is throwing a third anniversary party at South Hospitality (1460 Second Avenue) on Thursday 11.10, 7-9p. There will be free Bulldog gin 7-8p, free fried pickles and buffalo wings, and raffle prizes from various businesses. Get a free ticket at the Eventbrite page

3) Did you know it's the 50th Anniversary of The Phantom Tollbooth? The Brooklyn Historical Society is celebrating with author Norton Juster on Sunday, 11.13 at 2p. The event is free, but an RSVP is required. [via Gothamist]

Tuesday, November 1, 2011

Tuesday 11.1

It's November 1st, Bunny!

1) Believe it or not, it looks like the RSVP is still open for the free Special Disco Versions party at House of Vans (25 Franklin St., Brooklyn) tonight, which features James Murphy, Pat Mahoney, and Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem, along with Midnight Surfer. Sponsors include Sailor Jerry and Sapporo, so high chance of free drinks. 8p-12a.

2) Because there's no show at Brooklyn Bowl (61 Wythe Ave., Brooklyn) this evening, the friendly folks are screening "Alice on the Wall" (Alice in Wonderland + Pink Floyd's The Wall). Plus, free bowling and shoe rental! The movie starts at 9p, but you're going to want to get there near doors at 6p if you want to snag a free lane.

Via Oh My Rockness, a handful of concerts:

3) Terry Malts with support from Wax Idols at Cake Shop (152 Ludlow St.), 9:30p. Price unclear; free or cheap.

4) Le Butcherettes and Black Bells at Santos Party House (96 Lafayette St.), 7p, $12.

5) Battles at Webster Hall (125 E. 11th St.), 8p, $25.

A couple more treats

Keep making those Halloween plans:

1) Cointreau & BlackBook are throwing "Spooky Chic" (bahaha) Halloween parties in a bunch of cities this week. As of now, I can't find any RSVP information, so I guess just show up on time and hope for the best? Here's the NY lineup:
- 10.27, 7-9p at Yerba Buena (1 Perry Street)
- 10.27, 10p-12a at Hudson Hotel (aka that place above Good Units: 356 W. 58th)
- 10.28, 10p-12a at Hudson Terrace (621 W. 46th)

2) The first "Check Yo Ponytail" Tour (?): Spank Rock, Big Freedia & the Divas, the Death Set, and Pictureplane, 10.29 at Brooklyn Bowl (61 Wythe Avenue). This sounds like a great Halloween dance party (I've decided it's themed). It's free if you RSVP, which currently = liking them on Facebook or tweeting, but chances are they will have a normal list on the website as it gets closer, if you're stubborn like I am. Doors at 11:30p, show at midnight.

Thursday, October 13, 2011

Oh man, I just remembered who Andrew Andrew is

They're two DJs/party kids who live as twins (and are not actually), and do everything identically, including dressing, eating, and working.

[via NYTimes]

You should read the Times article; it's pretty ridiculous. Well anyway, I guess that's why they're the headliners at Antenna Presents on 10.20, 9p-12a (410 W. 16th Street). It should be interesting in and of itself, but Louis XIV are also performing. Free good-old-fashioned oversexed-rock. Plus, an open bar of some sort. This sounds great. For free entry RSVP to andrew@antennamag.com

Forts and Concerts

A couple good ones coming up that require advance RSVPs:

1) Purevolume Smartlounge CMJ Showcase, 1p. This is going on both 10.19 and 10.20 at the Thompson Hotel (190 Allen St.), with two stages both days. Live acts include, but are not limited to, DOM and Small Black on Wednesday, and Dum Dum Girls, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and The Stepkids on Thursday. Keep in mind that even the turntable.fm DJ stage will host big names like Talib Kweli, Nancy Whang (LCD Soundsystem), Ayad Al Adhamy (Passion Pit), and Andy Rourke (The Smiths). Oh, and did I mention that there will be a 2-hour open bar both days with Absolut, Jameson, and Chivas, plus tons of giveaways? RSVP here (you don't actually need to have a smartphone). [via My Free Concert]

DOM- Living in America
Small Black- Photojournalist
Dum Dum Girls- Bedroom Eyes (love this song)
Unknown Mortal Orchestra- How Can U Luv Me?
The Stepkids- Shadows on Behalf

2) The Fader Fort 2-9p, both 10.20 and 10.21 at Drive-In Studios (443 W. 18th St). This sounds great: more bands will probably be added, but already the lineup includes Purity Ring and Metronomy. There will also be free Bushmills, Budweiser, Pepsi, and espressos (presumably not the street name for a rave drug) galore. Get on that RSVP.

Like I said not too long ago, I can't cover all of the CMJ goodness next week, but RSVP-ing to these extravaganzas is a good idea. Here's a post-CMJ one:

3) Local x Local free concert series at Brooklyn Bowl 11.2, this time it's Caveman. Great if you miss them over CMJ. Doors at 6p, show at 8p. RSVP here.

Nylon Guys, Experimental DFW Theatre, Onion Sports, and Raveonettes Curating

1) Happening today, 10.12: Nylon Guys shopping preview at Bloomingdale's (1000 3rd Avenue @ 59th St.). "Enjoy comic book-inspired snacks, games, and music," plus free Tiger Beer. 6-9p.

2) Also today, 10.12: As part of the free Prelude 11 performance workshop (10.12-10.14), Daniel Fish's "A supposedly FUN THING I'll never do again: (after david foster wallace) will be performed from 7-8p at the James Gallery of the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center (365 Fifth Avenue). Here's the write-up:

"Drawing exclusively from audio recordings of David Foster Wallace (readings he gave of his short fiction, essays, and an extensive interview he did for German television), Daniel Fish and a small ensemble of actors seek to re-create the amazing presence Wallace brought to everything he wrote about, be it professional tennis, a boy's thirteenth birthday, or America's obsession with entertainment. The selection, order, and tempo of the recordings are mixed live and sent to each actor's Mp3 device during the performance. Wallace’s work as translated by the performers is like the garment of a dear, dead friend: an artifact that simultaneously and dramatically evokes his presence and his absence, asking us: How present can we be? How generous in the way we experience the cacophony of our world?"

Experimental theatre! Who knows? I would be happy seeing a staging of Eschaton for free.

3) Tuesday, 10.18: Launch of "The Ecstasy of Defeat," by the Onion editors. Top-notch sports humor. Will likely include an open bar. PowerHouse Arena (37 Main St., Brooklyn), 7-9p. RSVP to RSVP@powerhousearena.com.

4) Thursday, 10.27: Another installment of the Uncapped Live concert series put on by Vitamin Water and Vice, this time curated by the Raveonettes. Minks, The Rassle, and Zaza will be performing. It's likely that there will be free Vitamin Water and Sailor Jerry Rum at this thing. Union Pool (484 Union Ave., Brooklyn), doors at 8p. RSVP here.

Bootie NYC Mash-up Party

The Bootie mash-up dance parties happen occasionally all around the world, and while I've never been to one, they seem fun. Bootie Brooklyn East Coast vs. West Coast is coming back to Public Assembly (70 N. 6th St, Brooklyn), and will include an hour of free PBR. It'll only cost you $5 if you get on the list here. Sat 11.5, 9p-4a.
