A show in two. acts.

As an avid This American Life listener, I cannot believe how well done this parody is (audio towards the ends kind of NSFW). Edited so well, and the cadence is perfect. I hope this gets an uncomfortable shout out on an actual episode.

I think the other parts must be real clips of NPR; it just sounds too much like Terry Gross to be an imitator. I'd be delighted if someone proved me wrong, and we had four, not one, NPR-personality impersonators on our hands.

Gumby!

Have you seen today's interactive Google doodle for Art Clokey's 90th birthday? Check it out.

FACT: I know all the words to the Gumby theme song
FACT: I used to be afraid of the Blockheads to an embarrassing extent.

Try saying "pony pal Pokey" five times fast.

Corduroy Appreciation Club

Fun fact: "corduroy" means "fabric of the king." On 11.11.11 the Club is meeting at the Refectory at the Desmond Tutu Center on 10th Avenue. This will probably be the last Annual 11.11 meeting, and according to Gothamist, the event last year was hilarious. Some highlights from the event: Awards for Exemplary Usage of Corduroy, a keynote address, and the Installation of the Corduroy Messiah, a child who turns 11 on 11.11.11. I'll let the society speak:

"The Wales are aligning. The date which most closely resembles Corduroy, EVER, 111111 is upon us! Rejoice. Rejoice! Our day has come."

and:

"two Item Rule is NOT in EFFECT! We are instituting a THREE ITEM RULE! That means, you must wear THREE (3) items of Corduroy."

Tickets are steep at $41.11, but include an open bar and unlimited ridged potato chips. I'm really posting about this event not because I have any intention of going, but because it is so wonderfully specific and I AM SO EXCITED for 11.11.11.

I don't think I even own any corduroy currently. I should fix that.

Nylon Guys, Experimental DFW Theatre, Onion Sports, and Raveonettes Curating

1) Happening today, 10.12: Nylon Guys shopping preview at Bloomingdale's (1000 3rd Avenue @ 59th St.). "Enjoy comic book-inspired snacks, games, and music," plus free Tiger Beer. 6-9p.

2) Also today, 10.12: As part of the free Prelude 11 performance workshop (10.12-10.14), Daniel Fish's "A supposedly FUN THING I'll never do again: (after david foster wallace) will be performed from 7-8p at the James Gallery of the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center (365 Fifth Avenue). Here's the write-up:

"Drawing exclusively from audio recordings of David Foster Wallace (readings he gave of his short fiction, essays, and an extensive interview he did for German television), Daniel Fish and a small ensemble of actors seek to re-create the amazing presence Wallace brought to everything he wrote about, be it professional tennis, a boy's thirteenth birthday, or America's obsession with entertainment. The selection, order, and tempo of the recordings are mixed live and sent to each actor's Mp3 device during the performance. Wallace’s work as translated by the performers is like the garment of a dear, dead friend: an artifact that simultaneously and dramatically evokes his presence and his absence, asking us: How present can we be? How generous in the way we experience the cacophony of our world?"

Experimental theatre! Who knows? I would be happy seeing a staging of Eschaton for free.

3) Tuesday, 10.18: Launch of "The Ecstasy of Defeat," by the Onion editors. Top-notch sports humor. Will likely include an open bar. PowerHouse Arena (37 Main St., Brooklyn), 7-9p. RSVP to RSVP@powerhousearena.com.

4) Thursday, 10.27: Another installment of the Uncapped Live concert series put on by Vitamin Water and Vice, this time curated by the Raveonettes. Minks, The Rassle, and Zaza will be performing. A couple CMJ RSVPs

I'm not going to aim to post all of the cheap/free concerts going on for the CMJ festival, but I recommend both My Free Concert and Oh My Rockness if you want to be thorough about your planning. Most events you don't have to RSVP for to get in cheap or free, but here are a couple that you do:

1) The POPSHOP series by Neon Gold Records at Tammany Hall (152 Orchard St.). This showcase features Brite Futures, Xaphoon Jones (of Chiddy Bang), Electric Guest, Fallulah, and others. Plus a free Absolut open bar from 7-8p. RSVP to RSVP@Neongoldrecords.com. 10.20, 7p-4a.

2) Okay, so this isn't a concert per se, but if you're a guitar player and not lactose intolerant, it seems like a good one. Stompbox exhibit at the Living Room (Googie's Lounge section, 154 Ludlow St.), 10.21, 11am-7:00p.  There will be many different pedal boards to fool around with, and free grilled cheese sandwiches and drink specials starting at 1:30p. RSVP here for priority entrance.

Bootie NYC Mash-up Party

The Bootie mash-up dance parties happen occasionally all around the world, and while I've never been to one, they seem fun. Bootie Brooklyn East Coast vs. West Coast is coming back to Public Assembly (70 N. 6th St, Brooklyn), and will include an hour of free PBR. It'll only cost you $5 if you get on the list here. Sat 11.5, 9p-4a.
